Margaret Harmon's Tutoring Services

UPDATE: I am not tutoring at the moment. I have two little ones at home that take up all of my time, but I will update my blog when I am back at tutoring.

My name is Margaret Harmon and I am an experienced tutor. I have been tutoring since 2003. I love working with children and teaching them and seeing the understanding in their eyes when a concept finally makes sense.

I offer one-on-one tutoring to give the student my undivided attention. I am very patient and I believe that every child deserves to get the most out of their education. Each student is unique and I try to tailor my approach by using various methods to give the student different ways to look at the situation so they will be sure to grasp the concept by the end of the session.

I have been very successful with my past students. Every student has pulled his/her grade up at least one letter grade. One of my students was failing, and I was able to help them pull their grade up to a B+.

In order for tutoring to be successful, it depends a lot on the student. The student needs to be prepared with his/her textbook/workbooks, previous work (so I can determine what area they need help in), and homework. I have paper and pencils, but preferably the student needs to bring their own materials.

Academic Areas Covered
Elementary School K-5
READING: Phonics (learning how to read) and Reading Comprehension

WRITING: From letter formation up to essay writing and everything in between

SPELLING: applying phonics to easily spell and be confident using spelling patterns as well as being aware of rule-breaking words. This overlaps reading & writing and is not just memorizing a list of spelling words

MATH: number sense, all operations, word problems, fractions, decimals, percentages, pre-algebra, and geometry

SOCIAL STUDIES & SCIENCE: Often, a reading comprehension gap can hinder understanding of these subjects

ORGANIZATIONAL & STUDY SKILLS: These skills are embedded into all of my instruction. They are extremely important!

Cancellations

If for some reason you need to cancel the tutoring session, please call at least 4 hours ahead of time. If not, I will charge you for the scheduled session time.

Location

I live in SW Huntsville, AL. I am available to tutor at my home. My house is ideal for tutoring sessions because it is tidy and free of distractions so the student and I can concentrate on the lesson in peace and quiet. I do have a 1 year old son, but he usually sits in my lap or plays with his toys near me, so he won't bother the student during tutoring sessions.
